From AIFD:
Does Islam Need Reform, and if so, How?
~Hear different perspectives at SCC and contribute to discussion at forum on April 19~
Scottsdale, AZ (March 25, 2011) - Scottsdale Community College and the Maricopa Community College Diversity Infusion Program are pleased to present a Perspectivesforum titled: "Does Islam Need Reform, and If So, How?" on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 from 6:30pm - 8pm in the Turquoise Room at Scottsdale Community College, 9000 E. Chaparral Rd., Scottsdale.
Perspectives is a "coffee house" forum designed to stimulate thought and discussion about important and frequently controversial issues on a variety of topics. Forums are facilitated to ensure that all views are heard, that conversation is kept civil and appropriate (without infringing on the process of debate or concerns about being "politically correct"), and that attendees are actively engaged in the process. The forums are designed to create a lively and stimulating discussion.
The upcoming Perspectives forum will feature a panel of experts who will contribute to community discussion on the controversial question of whether or not Islam needs to be reformed. M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., and Anas Hlayhel have appeared on numerous local and national stages and will be part of the panel discussion at SCC.
M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D
M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D. is the President and Founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD). A devout Muslim, Dr. Jasser founded AIFD in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the United States as an effort to provide an American Muslim voice advocating for the preservation of the founding principles of the United States Constitution, liberty and freedom, and the separation of mosque and state. He is leading the fight to shake the hold that the Muslim Brotherhood and their Network of American Islamist organizations and Mosques have on organized Islam in America.
Dr. Jasser is a nationally recognized expert in the contest of ideas against political Islam and American Islamist organizations. He has spoken at hundreds of national and international events including colleges and universities, places of worship, government venues and many other public functions. On October 1, 2009, Dr. Jasser briefed members of Congress on the threat of Political Islam. He regularly briefs members of the House and Senate congressional anti-terror caucuses.
Anas Hlayhel
Anas Hlayhel was born and raised in Lebanon. He came to US after high school and graduated from the University of Houston as an Electrical Engineer. Since then, he has worked in the high-tech industry at companies such as AMD and Intel. Since very young, Anas has had a great affection for the Islamic sciences. He has studied classical texts in Islamic theology, jurisprudence, and Arabic grammar under the tutelage of a number of Muslim scholars. Anas has an Ijazah in Hadith (certification to narrate and teach the tradition of Prophet Muhammad). Anas has been teaching Islam and delivering Friday sermons for the past 15 years.
Currently, Anas serves as the chairman of the Arizona chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR); and as a part-time Imam at the Islamic Center of North East Valley. He also leads several Muslim youth groups across the valley.
