English Christians are not 'persecuted,' leading prelate assures
February 23, 2012
England’s leading Catholic prelate has advised Christians in Great Britain not to claim that they are being persecuted.
“I personally don’t feel in the least bit persecuted,” said Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster. “I don’t think Christians should use that word.”
During a recent visit to the Vatican, a Muslim member of the British ruling cabinet, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, complained that “militant secularism” is oppressing Christianity. A former Archbishop of Canterbury, Baron Carey of Clifton, followed up by saying that he saw a “crusade” against the Christian faith. But the Catholic prelate downplayed such fears.
Archbishop Nichols described the current conflict by saying that “what might have started out as an acknowledgement of a variety of religious and philosophical positions has produced a seeming determination to tear the legal and therefore cultural life of the country away from its Christian roots."
