SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Highway Patrol Association wants the full 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse a panel of its own judges and leave in place 14 memorial crosses along Utah's highways.

In August, a panel of three judges ruled the 12-foot-high white crosses erected by the association to memorialize fallen Utah Highway Patrol troopers were an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.

In a petition to the court filed Wednesday, association lawyers called the ruling erroneous and asked for a rehearing of the case by the full panel of the Denver court's judges.

Texas-based American Atheists Inc., sued the state of Utah in 2005 over the use of the highway patrol's logo on the crosses.
