A survey just published in Denmark has shown a majority of Danes fear that Islam is an obstacle to society.

The Ramboell institute, which recorded the survey, said while one in two Danes believe that immigration is positive for Danish society, some 54.9 percent believe that Islam hinders social harmony.

39.9 percent disagreed and 5.2 percent did not comment.

49.7 percent of respondents said they believed that immigration and the integration of immigrants and their offspring had been generally positive for Danish society.

Some 42.4 percent believed immigrants have been negative for society and 5.9 percent abstained from comment.

Imran Shah, a spokesman for the Danish Islamic community, later told Jyllands-Posten newspaper he thought Danish people were finding it difficult to discern between culture and religion.

He said the attitude toward Muslims was often based on negative cultural aspect, such as honour crimes and forced marriages, rather than the religion.

The Jyllands-Posten newspaper enraged Muslims in September 2005 when it published 12 cartoons parodying the prophet Mohammed, and exposing the uneasiness of Danes toward Islam.
