Groningen asylum seeker who shot policeman had lost appeal
The asylum seeker who shot dead a policeman in Groningen last week and is thought to have battered his girlfriend to death had just been told he had lost his right to live in the Netherlands, the Telegraaf reports
Alasam S came to the Netherlands in 2001 from Benin as an unaccompanied minor when he was 15 years old. By the time he was 17, he was living in a closed unit in Groningen and was later given psychiatric help, the paper says.
Jo Berends, from a local church organisation that works with asylum seekers, said S did not use drink or drugs but was depressed and saw no future.
Medical grounds
‘I last saw him on Wednesday. He was down and did not want to talk. He had just had the court letter rejecting his appeal to stay on medical grounds,’ Berends said.
The father of the policeman shot dead by S is active in the same church group. He has reportedly told fellow members he does not intend to stop his work with the organisation.
Earlier this month, an Iranian asylum seeker who had lost his right to stay set fire to himself on the Dam in central Amsterdam. He died later in hospital.
