U.K.: Sikh Support For The EDL Stronger Than Ever In The Midlands

From Europe News:

Sikh Support for the EDL Stronger Than Ever in the Midlands

English Defence League 22 June 2011

EDL Spokesman Guramit Singh on BBC West Midlands Radio Guramit Singh will be well known to EDL supporters for his honest and uncompromising approach to the threat posed by radical or fundamental Islam.

In this radio interview he explains why new mosques can be seen as potential breeding grounds for radical Muslims. Radical preachers are still granted audiences in British mosques, and the Muslim community are showing too few signs that they are either equipped or prepared to expel extremism from their religion.

We want Muslims to tackle extremism, and we want to be able to assist them in any way we can, but for this to happen we have to first ask, 'why Islam?'. What is it about this one religion which makes it so effective at breeding extremists and terrorists?

As Guramit says:

"I'm not saying every Muslim in the world is a terrorist, but it's funny how every terrorist is a Muslim. Why is that? Because their ideology tells them to kill."

It's a hard truth, but it's something that we cannot ignore. More importantly, it's something that British Muslims should not ignore.

The interviewer, Steve Dyson, kept returning to the same point - 'will Muslims not be offended?' That really isn't the point. If Muslims are offended by what Guramit has said in his speeches and videos then it's because he's helping to reveal uncomfortable truths - not because he's making accusations that are in any way baseless or unfair.

Muslims should be offended. They should be offended by what is said and done in their name.

They should be offended by the radicals, by Islamic terrorists, and by those whose support for Sharia Law undermines both respect for the law of the land and the basic rights of fellow Britons.

They should be offended by the self-imposed segregation of their communities, and by the religious leaders who preach only intolerance and hatred of non-Muslims.

They should be offended each and every time Islam is used as an excuse for the oppression of women, or the exploitation of young girls.

They should be offended by their fellow Muslims - by those who support terrorist organisations such as Hamas, by those who wish the Taliban victory over British soldiers, or by those who mourned the death of Osama bin Laden.

If Muslims are offended by what Guramit says then they need to do something about it - and we don't mean calling Guramit an extremist for daring to oppose extremism! They need to take a long hard look at their scriptures and at the behaviour of their fellow Muslims. They need to push for change, for modernisation. They cannot simply sit back and believe that they have the right not to be offended.

We are not talking about privately held beliefs, or about ideas that should not be open to criticism. We are talking about an ideology that kills, that ruins lives, and which divides our communities. People need to be provoked, they need to be shaken into action. That certainly doesn't mean violence, but it does mean saying things that some people really won't like. Refusing to talk about the problems with Islam would be a crime, because it would just make things worse - it would strengthen radical Islam, and would help ensure that we never manage to identify the root of the problem, or establish what can be done to safeguard our childrens' futures against the continued threat of Islamic terrorism.

But that's exactly what is happening - people are refusing to talk about the issues. Guramit's arguments that Islam had to be held accountable, and that individual Muslims have to start doing something about the violent passages in their scripture, went completely uncontested. The main arguments he faced were the same kinds of name-calling that many of us are familiar with - the sort of arguments used by those who really don't want to talk about the issues and would rather slander an individual for views that they allegedly (but almost certainly do not) hold.

In response to the question 'are you racist?' Guramit replies quite simply:

"I wasn't calling out against race, I was calling out against an ideology, against fundamental Islam"

It's not about race. It never has been. And you really need to question the motives of those who wish it were.

If it were about race then we'd be criticising something that has no bearing on the sort of things that we want to stop. The colour of someone's skin has absolutely no bearing on whether they believe that killing innocent people can be justified. Unfortunately, which religion an individual belongs to does. It may not be entirely true to say that all terrorists are Muslims, but no one can deny that there is not a particular problem with Islam. There is simply a correlation between extremism and Islam - one which needs to be explored and explained - but one that it would be offensive and quite wrong to claim exists between extremism and race.

But even worse, if the EDL were talking about race then we'd be criticising something that no one has the power to change. We believe that Islam must be held accountable. That means that it must change, and that individual Muslims must be willing to be part of that change. But we are not insisting that Muslims cease to be Muslims - that they give up on their beliefs entirely or convert to another religion - just that they turn their back on the radicals and on fundamental Islam. That is a perfectly reasonable request, and not one that could be made of someone's race.

Quite simply, it would be wrong to attribute any blame for hostile acts to someone's race, and it would be entirely nonsensical to ask them to them 'reform' their race. The supposed parallels between justified criticism of Islam and prejudiced racism therefore do not exist.

The one point that we should perhaps accept from West Midlands radio is whether we have a responsibility to ensure that people support the EDL for the right reasons. We believe we do. That is why we will continue to speak out against racism and against unjust discrimination against Muslims. It is not because we think our critics are right to call us racists or our supporters 'yobs' or troublemakers - far from it. It is because the EDL always has been, and always will be, dedicated to promoting real change, to defending our country, our people, and our children - Muslim and non-Muslim alike - from the threat posed by radical Islam, militant Islam, fundamental Islam, or whatever you wish to call it.

If that offends a few people along the way then so be it.

No surrender.

Basic Freedoms: A Relic Of The Past

From Europe News:

Basic Freedoms: A Relic of the Past

Gates of Vienna 22 June 2011

As I mentioned yesterday , Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff is visiting Canada. After speaking in Montreal last night, the following op-ed by her was published in The National Post :

Attacking the messenger

by Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff

The following text is adapted from remarks delivered by the author in Montreal on June 20 at a pro-free-speech event organized by the group ACT Now for Canada.

For far too long, many of us in the West have taken our basic freedoms for granted. These rights include freedom of individual conscience, the right to assemble peaceably, and the right to practice our religion freely, or to have no religion at all. Perhaps most importantly of all, they include the right to voice our opinions freely and to publish them without hindrance.

Nowhere is this attack on free speech more evident than in Europe. The Framework Decision of the European Union states that "each member state shall take the measures necessary . to ensure that the following intentional conduct is punishable.” Such "intentional conduct” includes "conduct which is a pretext for directing acts against a group of persons or a member of such a group defined by reference to race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin.”

Dutch politician Geert Wilders, me and numerous other Europeans who have criticized Islam have been punished as a result. For several years, I gave lectures and seminars on the dangers that Islamic law, known as Shariah, posed to my country, Austria. A year and a half ago, I was made aware that "hate speech” charges might be filed against me because I had "denigrated religious teachings.” Eventually, I was tried, convicted and fined for little more than repeating passages from the Koran itself.

My case was not based on law. It was a political trial. It was intended to silence criticism of Shariah law. It was also intended to discourage anyone who might consider following in my footsteps. The European establishment fears a frank discussion of Islam and its legal doctrines — and is reverting to the methods of a totalitarian state to enforce silence on the topic.

This has a historical precedent [in the Second World War era]. Totalitarianism did not come quickly to Austria: It took five years, from 1938 to 1943 for a full-fledged dictatorship to appear, and for people to realize it. If it had come overnight, Austrians would have fought against it. Instead, there was creeping gradualism [in the erosion of] freedom, including freedom of speech.

Vienna today is not a city of jackboots and swastikas. It is prosperous, peaceful and civilized. But there is another Vienna, which includes areas populated by a Muslim majority, where resentment breeds high crime rates, with high unemployment resulting from Muslim youth unwilling or unable to finish compulsory schooling. Ignoring these problems will not solve them, nor will silencing the voices of those — such as me — who criticize government inaction.

Reclaiming our nations will not be an easy task, but if we do not make the attempt, European civilization — the heart of Western civilization — will be destroyed. What were formerly our nations will become regions with indistinct boundaries, populated mainly by people of foreign cultures and administered by totalitarian bureaucrats. The natives will be reduced to curators and costumed actors in a quaint theme park.

Call it "Euro World”: Authentic cuisine, ethnic dancers and fireworks at 10 o’clock. Basic freedoms, a relic of the past.

UK: The Day Will Come When We Will Conquer the White House, Cameron and Obama Will Be on Their Knees, and Queen Elizabeth Will Wear the Veil

by sheikyermami on June 21, 2011

Here we go again: Muslims tell us every day what their intentions are, and loudly so. If we repeat what they say, the leftist bacteria calls us racist bigot Islamophobes. WTF is wrong with our society?

Wake up, and listen to Islam’s plan for America and for the world at large. Here is a video clip of them telling you what they are going to do, how they are going to do it, and when it’s going to happen. If you can watch this video and still think that Islam is a ‘religion of peace’, then you will deserve what you get when it happens. And remember, what you are about to see is an unedited video of Islam telling you what’s coming, just like Hitler did in 1928 when he wrote Mein Kampf.

Following are excerpts from a public address delivered by British Islamist Abu Waleed at a London demonstration. The address was posted on the Internet on May 25, 2011. From MEMRI

British Islamist Abu Waleed: The Day Will Come When We Will Conquer the White House, Cameron and Obama Will Be on Their Knees, and Queen Elizabeth Will Wear the Veil

Abu Waleed: These infidels – they fear the most when you come out and say: Allah Akbar. By Allah, our words are like arrows on the chests of the enemies of Allah. This is why these infidels fear us so much – not because we come out and incite any violence. We are not the terrorists, my dear brothers. We know very well who is a terrorist. The Americans have massacred Muslims as well as non-Muslims, for far too many years. Go and ask the Indians inside America. Go and as the Filipinos. Go and ask the Vietnamese people. How many people have been massacred under the guise of democracy and freedom?

It should be an established fact for us that Allah said: “Fain would they extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will not allow but that His light should be perfected, even though the unbelievers may detest it.” These infidels wish to wipe out the light of Allah, the light of Islam. But Allah will never allow the light of Islam to be wiped out. So it should come as no surprise why the likes of [Pastor] Terry Jones, why the likes of the BNP [British National Party] or the EDL [English Defense League], dare to come out and burn the Koran, or even touch the Koran. Do you know why? It is because of the rise of Islam within the West and the East.

For your information, after the September 11 bombings, when everybody thought there was going to be a backlash against the Muslim community, they said that within the first six months, over 35,000 Americans embraced Islam. That is a victory for us.

Demonstrator: Say: “Allah Akbar!”

Crowds: Allah Akbar!

[…]

Abu Waleed: We can see throughout history how Islam came to conquer every single country. In the year 1453, Muhammad Al-Fateh took Islam all the way to the Persian Empire [sic]. The Persian Empire fell because of the light of Islam. History, my dear brothers and sisters, always repeats itself.

Pharaoh had a dream that Moses would rise up and overthrow him. Likewise, today, the MI5, the FBI, the British Police, the American government, and the British government are all having this dream that Moses has returned. Believe you me, this dream will turn into a living nightmare, because the flag of Islam will be over the US embassy, it will be over Downing Street…

Demonstrator: Say: “Allah Akbar!”

Crowds: Allah Akbar!

Abu Waleed: It will be over every single embassy until every single embassy closes, and in fact, until all the borders are shut down, and we have only one flag. Look closely, my dear brothers, at that flag of Islam. That is the flag that they fear the most. That is the flag of the Prophet Muhammad – not the Saudi flag, not the American flag, not the British flag, not the Somali flag, not the Bangladeshi flag.

[…]

Today, my dear brothers, victory is for Islam. Victory is for the Muslims. Our Prophet, our Messenger, informed us that Judgment Day will not come until a group of Muslims rise in this nation, and they will go to the White House.

Demonstrator: Say: “Allah Akbar!”

Crowds: Allah Akbar!

Abu Waleed: By Allah, we will conquer the White House, because Allah willing, we will see the day when the door of the White House is kicked in, and the Caliph walks in. The Muslims rise up, like Bilal rose up inside Mecca, and he called for prayers. What did Bilal say? What did Bilal say? It is what we, the Muslims, will say from the White House: Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. That is what the call will be, my dear brothers.

[…]

The day will come when David Cameron and Barrack Obama will be on their knees, giving us, the Muslims, the jizya. That’s right.

[…]

Believe me, the day will come when even Queen Elizabeth will wear the niqab and the burqa.

Demonstrator: Say: “Allah Akbar!”

Crowds: Allah Akbar!

Abu Waleed: Say: “Allah Akbar!”

Crowds: Allah Akbar!

Abu Waleed: Say: “Allah Akbar!”

Crowds: Allah Akbar!

Abu Waleed: There is no god but Allah!

Crowds: There is no god but Allah!

Obama’s Bridge to Islam

by Daniel Greenfield

All the old familiar names pop up when we take a closer look at the advocates and the money behind the push for sharia in the US of A.

Fareed Zakaria Suggests U.S. Take a Cue From Iceland: Change the Constitution

(Israelnationalnews.com) Obama has announced the appointment of Azizah al-Hibri to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. Al-Hibri (full name, Azizah Yahia Muhammad Toufiq al-Hibri) is a Muslim professor and the granddaughter of a Sheikh, who claims that the Koran inspired Thomas Jefferson and the Founders and that the Saudi criminal justice system is more moral than the American one because it accepts blood money from murderers.

Appointing a Muslim scholar to a commission on international religious freedom is only justifiable if that scholar recognized that much of the injustice in the world originates from Islamic law. But Al-Hibri has made her career whitewashing Islamic law and even presenting it as superior to American law.

While she has been called a reformer, her call in 2001 for a return to the fundamentals echoes Wahhabi rhetoric. Rather than examining the incompatibilities of Islamic law and the modern world, and urging the appropriate adjustments, as genuine reformers have done, Al-Hibri instead builds myths that uphold the Islamist agenda.

The imam Justin Elliott explains Islam for you (courtesy the Saudi-funded John Esposito)

Please read this, as another braindead lefty loon looks to Saudi funded propagandists to explain Islam….

According to Al-Hibri “Islamic fiqh is deeper and better than Western codes of law”. She favorably compares Saudi Arabia’s willingness to accept blood money bribes to excuse a murder, to the “impersonal and powerful” American justice system.

Al-Hibri is often billed as a Muslim feminist, but she is equally hypocritical on women’s rights. Rather than conceding that Islamic law discriminates against women, she whitewashes its discriminatory treatment of women, arguing that guardianship is meant to protect “inexperienced women”.

Rather than trying to bring Islam in line with the modern world, Azizah Al-Hibri pushes for the modern world to be brought in line with Islam. Rather than reforming Islam, it is America that she would like to reform to Islamic standards.

Placing a woman who believes that American law is inferior to that of the Koran on an American commission to promote international religious freedom perverts the purpose of the commission and promotes religious tyranny instead.

Given a forum to call for reform, Al-Hibri unerringly insists that there is nothing to reform. At the UN, Al-Hibri expressed outrage that the Koran, which “established acceptance of others, now needed to be defended” and insisted that Islam “guaranteed freedom of thought”.

Listening to her defend Mohammed’s tyranny as an early form of democracy at the UN is a reminder of the era when Soviet representatives to the UN angrily defended their record on human rights and insisted that there is no freedom outside of Communism.

In Al-Hibri’s distorted history, the wave of genocides and conquests that turned the multicultural Middle-East into a desert of brutality governed by minor variations of Islamic ideology, was actually a wave of enlightenment. The massacres of the region’s Jews and the purge of all other religions from the area never occurred in Al-Habri’s history book.

Revisionist history of this kind would be dangerous even if it were not coming from a woman in a position to influence opinion leaders.

The twin approaches of the Islamist narrative may be described as the Caliph Omar bridge. When the Muslim armies of the Caliph reached the great Library of Alexandria, he decreed that it should be burned, for if the library’s scrolls held the same ideas as the Koran they were redundant, and if they opposed the Koran, they were heretical.

While some Islamists attack the United States Constitution as a heretical document and Western Civilization as worthless– others more cleverly represent the Constitution as an inferior version of the Koran and Western Civilization as derivative of Islamic civilization. Either way they must burn along with the Library of Alexandria.

But the second approach is more seductive. Rather than launching a direct attack, it seeks to construct a bridge that connects Islam and the West. But the structure of the bridge is only a more insidious form of attack.

These bridge builders don’t come bearing a torch, rather an argument that since American law is derived from Islam, it must ‘revert’ to the higher standards of Islamic law. By contrasting the reality of American law with an ideal version of Islamic law that does not exist anywhere in the world, they manage to make the system that protects human rights seem shabby, while the system that represses women and minorities appears noble and righteous.

That is the kind of revisionist history that Al-Hibri traffics in, creating a noble Islamic creed contrasted with a flawed American system.

Al-Hibri appears to transmute the rhetoric of Islamism into sweet music to progressive ears, and her associations only reinforce that image. She served on the advisory board of Alamoudi’s American Muslim Council, defended it in print against accusations of extremism and made joint appearances with Alamoudi even after his statements in support of terrorism.

In 1995 she even testified at a congressional hearing against the Comprehensive Anti-Terrorism Act’s ability to cut off funds to terrorist groups, because, “it gives the President the ability to designate, with no effective recourse, certain groups as terrorist”.

The America Muslim Council, whose national advisory board Al-Hibri sat on, had reason to fear that portion of the act. Some years later the AMC would be caught encouraging donations to the Holy Land Foundation and the Global Relief Foundation, both charities affiliated with terrorists.

In the early days of 2001, Al-Hibri traveled to the Afghan border and criticized the Western press for “sensationalizing” Taliban atrocities and using them “as an opportunity to attack Islam”. After the attacks of September 11, she cautioned against bombing Al-Qaeda and Taliban targets during Ramadan. And that same year she defended Wahhabism as part of Islam’s “religious diversity” and its “marketplace of ideas”.

Al-Hibri appeared at an ISNA panel two months ago to call on Obama to stand up for Muslims against their American critics. And her insistence that no Muslim country practices true Sharia law appears to echo a familiar Islamist slogan. When the Archbishop of Canterbury endorsed bringing Sharia to the UK, Al-Hibri gave an approving quote. Last year at the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association she called for a “a council of scholars” to serve as a central authority on Islam for the United States.

Azizah Al-Hibri’s feminist credentials rest heavily on Karamah, an organization of Muslim women lawyers, primarily funded by her brother Ibrahim El-Hibri and nephew Fuad El-Hibri’s “El-Hibri Charitable Foundation”.

The El-Hibri clan are a curious footnote in the War on Terror. Ibrahim El-Hibri had made a fortune doing business with Saudi Arabia. His company dominates the manufacture of the anthrax vaccine and suspicions have been raised by the Wall Street Journal about leaks from their company into the hands of terrorists. Regardless of all that, there is something ironic in Azizah Al-Hibri’s feminist organization being funded by her brother’s charitable trust with a board of trustees that includes two male members of the family, but not her.

Another donor to Karamah was Prince Alwaleed bin Talal of the famously progressive Saudi royal family. A kingdom well known for promoting feminism and women’s rights, which no doubt in between banning women from driving cars and distributing such feminist tracts as “Women Who Deserve To Go To Hell” funds organizations that empower women. Rather than organizations that put a faux feminist face on the Islamic repression of women.

Yet the oddest moment in Al-Hibri’s career of promoting Islamic law in the United States may have come when before Clinton’s impeachment proceedings, she actually wrote an article discussing how a sitting President of the United States might be tried under Islamic law.

“Had the President been testifying in an Islamic court, he would not have been placed in this terrible predicament in the first instance,” Al-Hibri wrote. As an added bonus, to Bill, she added that under Islamic law, it would be his accusers “would be punished for committing the crime of qathf”.

In a further reminder of the Islamic commitment to freedom of speech; “Others who violated his privacy and broadcast his behavior are guilty and, if not repentant, are punishable.” We can only guess if this involved stoning Matt Drudge.

Al-Hibri went on to point out that four witnesses to the crime were lacking. The same law that makes it so easy for gang rapists to accuse their victim of adultery, while leaving her helpless to defend against the charges.

Then she wrote, “Coming from a religious background, the President may have understood the religious significance of penetration and hence avoided it.” Clearly Bill Clinton wasn’t just the nation’s first Black president. He was also its first Muslim president.

At no point in this surreal article did Al-Hibri acknowledge that adultery is a crime punishable by death or vicious corporal punishment in much of the Muslim world. Instead she used a congressional investigation into presidential malfeasance to misrepresent Islamic law, which lashes or stones adulterers to death, as a more liberal code.

What can such a woman offer to the cause of international religious freedom? Only Obama and Bill know.

Christian Persecution In Nigeria Continues

Christian Persecution in Nigeria Continues

LAGOS, NIGERIA (Worthy News)-- The Christian farmers of Mdandi village in northern Nigeria were preparing for a new harvest when armed Islamists attacked their homes and drove them out.

"On their first attack, we fought back, defending ourselves and our families," said Luka Zafi, pastor of the Church of Christ in Nigeria. "And not being able to force us out, they retreated. We had thought that we would not be attacked again, but ... they left and returned the second time with more of them, and all armed with guns. We could not fight back since we do not have arms to fight them. We ran out of the village, and they destroyed our two church buildings and our houses."

Zafi's church had 50 members, but now Muslim Fulani nomads graze cattle on its grounds.

Zafi said the need for the Nigerian government to halt the attacks of Muslim militants was more important than restoring Christian property.

"Unless this is done, I am afraid Christians in this part of the country may be on their way to extinction," he said.

Christian Persecution in Nigeria Intensifies

Islamists also attacked the village of Gumel, destroying three church buildings and burning more than 50 houses.

"They overpowered us, so we had to flee with our wives and children," said Pastor Ishaya Magaji, 65, formerly of the Gumel COCIN church. "They burned our houses and destroyed our properties. We cannot return to the village -- not only because our houses have been destroyed, but because the Muslims have taken over the village and are using the place as a grazing field for the Fulani Muslims."

Islamists also destroyed a Roman Catholic parish and an Evangelical Church; most of the villagers are now refugees in other towns and villages in Tafawa Balewa, including Rafin Ganba, Bwar, Mantokshin and Nahuta.

Magaji said the attack on his village was part of a jihad waged against Christians in Bauchi state.

"We have lost all that we have and have nowhere to turn," he said. "The government should help us by rebuilding our churches and homes so that we can all return to the village."

Kidnapping Christian Females: Woman Abducted By Men In Islamic Clothing In Java

From Christians Under Attack:

17 June 2011

Church: Woman Abducted By Men in Islamic Clothing

Church elders on Friday claimed a woman from their congregation in East Java had been kidnapped by suspected Islamic hard-liners .

Rev. Yessaya Malino, head of the Pentecostal church in Situbondo, told the Jakarta Globe that church member Aprilia Dyah Kusumaningrum had disappeared on Wednesday night after a church service.

Rev. Nico Lamboan, Aprilia’s former teacher, said the 22-year-old had texted her mother at 9 p.m. and told her she had been forced into a car by a group of unknown men.

“Her mother called me and forwarded her message,” Nico said.

“It said: ‘Mom I’m really scared, I’ve been forcefully taken into a car by some men in white robes and headscarves, I don’t know where they’re taking me.’ ”

She added that family and friends had tried to call Aprilia’s cellphone immediately after receiving the message, but the number was already unreachable. They also went out to look for her, but to no avail.

“She’s new at the Pentecostal church,” Nico said. “She told me she really loved her job, but she never mentioned anything about a kidnap threat.”

Yessaya confirmed the church had never received any threats or intimidation from any parties prior to Wednesday’s incident. He added there had also been no ransom demands since Aprilia’s disappearance.

“This is very unexpected and we still don’t know what’s going on,” he said.

He added he had reported the case to the Situbondo Police.

“We’re obviously very concerned, but I think it’s a little too early to confirm this is a kidnapping. Hopefully it’s not.”

When the Globe first attempted to confirm whether a police report had been filed, Adj. Comr. Sunarto, the Situbondo chief of detectives, denied receiving any reports of a kidnapping.

However, a local journalist speaking on condition of anonymity said that a church representative had indeed gone to the police station to file a report. The journalist added that officers had prohibited reporters from taking any pictures at the time.

Sunarto later acknowledged that the Pentecostal church had filed a report. “We’re still investigating the case,” he said. “We just want to be extra careful because it’s related to religious issues, so please try to understand.”

The incident, if confirmed to be a kidnapping by Islamic hard-liners, would be the latest in a disturbing trend of intolerance.

Theophilus Bela, secretary general of the Indonesian Committee of Religions for Peace, said recently that while police were on high alert for such incidents in large cities, smaller towns, where security measures were lax, were prone to outbreaks of intolerance.

However, Hendardi, who chairs the human rights Setara Institute for Peace and Democracy, warned against concluding that Aprilia was kidnapped as a result of religious intolerance. “With limited information about the case, we should not accuse anyone,” he said.

Pakistan: Christian Families Flee False Accusation Of Blasphemy

From Christians Under Attack:

20 June 2011

Punjab: Christian families flee false accusation of blasphemy

The students of a madrassa try to force a child to convert. A relative is attacked for defending him, and accused of blasphemy. A priest: "This is a common practice in the region. Many cases of forced conversions are not made known". The authorities turn a blind eye to the problem.

Lahore (AsiaNews) - Ten Christian families were forced to flee from Chak 68, Arifwala, in Khanewal district, for fear of the consequences of an accusation of blasphemy. A Christian boy of eight years, Ihtesham, nicknamed "Sunny" went to buy ice in a market, and was surrounded and harassed by students of a madrassa, an Islamic religious school. They asked him to recite verses from the Koran, those every Muslim reads the so-called "Kalma", in short the statement that "there is no God but Allah ...." They asked him to renounce his religion and convert to Islam.

An uncle of Sunny, Dildar Masih, seeing that his nephew was in trouble, because of the students, intervened. Sunny explained to him that they were bullying him to renounce his religion. Dildar addressed the boys, he rebuked them and told Sunny to go home. The boys told of the incident to the religious leaders at the madrasas. The latter announced that Dildar Masih had committed blasphemy, making fun of Koranic verses, and the loudspeaker of the madrasa urged all to punish the blasphemer, to set an example. A crowd gathered around Dildar where he was working and attacked him. After the incident, ten families fled from the village.

Father Rufin John, from Khanewal, told AsiaNews: "This is a common practice in the region. Many cases of forced conversions are not disclosed. In many schools it is mandatory for all to read verses from the Koran, it is in the program, and is compulsory for students of all faiths to read them. If students of faiths other than Islam do not read them, they are subject to abuse, or are thrown out of schools. "

Father Afzal Masih of Rahim Yar Khan told AsiaNews: "In Rahim Khan, the madrasa students annoy teenagers of different faiths every day. They do not allow them to play in their playgrounds, they do not want them to pass close to the madrasas, the radical school of thought is at its maximum in this region. They are taught that Christians and people of other religions may be killed if they do not accept Islam. And the authorities turn a blind eye to this problem. "
